I want to start with some ground rules for all the comments I am going to make here. These are going to seem pretty random until I get the whole way through my commentary, but just keep these things in mind as this evolves.
First and foremost, I loved this trip. I was miserably sick, I was missing home in a huge way, everywhere except Sharad & Ruchi’s homes were filthy and I was afraid to consume pretty much any food or water, but I loved this trip. It isn’t a matter of IF I will go back, but WHEN I will go back.
Second, I was constantly reminding myself that I was a Western spectator in an Eastern world. That matters a lot.
Third, after a while, you get used to the poverty. You can’t help it. Once you’ve seen one filthy toddler standing on the side of the street pointing as his open mouth or one crippled man with no legs and flip flops on his hands, you’ve pretty much seen them all. It shocks you at first, but after a few times, you just don’t see it anymore. So having said that, here’s my take on an absolutely fascinating country & its wonderful people.
